VETS4PETS HITS ITS HALF CENTURY
Isle News, 11 September 2009 – A leading local firm with a major UK presence is set to open its 50th outlet.
Peter Watson, founder and Managing Director of Vets4Pets, has revealed that the company will reach its half-century this autumn: ‘I can confirm that we have just signed the lease on our fiftieth practice, which is a significant milestone for us. We’re all absolutely delighted.’
Mr Watson paid tribute to the Vets4Pets staff: ‘This achievement is testimony to the terrific team that we have built, both here and across the UK. They all believe passionately in what they do and there’s a real buzz about this company, which just keeps driving it forward. It’s a very positive place to work.’ He added: ‘It’s a Guernsey success story and I’m very proud of what they’ve all achieved.’ The company was founded in Guernsey, in 2001.
The fiftieth Vets4Pets practice is set to open in Kettering, Northamptonshire, in late November. It will be the last of five new outlets scheduled to launch over an eight week period, from mid October. Mr Watson said that the company is broadening its national coverage: ‘We already have a strong presence in the North East, North West, North of England and the Midlands, and have received the go-ahead for our first Northern Ireland practice. We’re also improving our coverage in the southern counties.’ He added that the company is hoping to open in Scotland in the coming year and has received local approval for a branch surgery in St Sampson’s.
Vets4Pets plans to continue expanding at a rate of one new practice per month, for the next 12 months. Mr Watson said this would create local opportunities: ‘Each new opening creates roughly 0.8 of a new job here in the Guernsey support centre, so we’re always looking for energetic people to help drive the business forward.’
Mr Watson said that many people did not realise the range of career opportunities: ‘Many islanders believe that we are only looking for vets, but that’s certainly not the case. We have a growing demand for people with skills across a range of key disciplines, such as accountancy, IT, HR and marketing. Our main activity here in Guernsey is to provide business support to the practice network, so that our Joint Venture Partners are free to get on with the job of delivering excellent pet care.’
Mr Watson said that the Vets4Pets concept is well suited to Guernsey: ‘Land and labour are bound to be at a premium in an island of this size, but there’s no reason why you can’t find those elsewhere. We’re building a business using the resources that we do have here, such as high-quality staff and business know-how, to satisfy a demand outside of the island.’
Mr Watson confirmed that the company is in a growth phase: ‘We’re happy that the business model is right and working well. A lot of the hard, initial development work has been done and we’re now in a period of steady expansion. Expect to see many more of Vets4Pets across the UK over the next couple of years, bringing more local job opportunities.’
