TYNWALD DAY PUBLIC EMAIL ACCESS HIGHLIGHT FOR MANX COMPUTERBUS

Isle News, 30 June 2009 – Tynwald Day visitors to St John’s will have the added bonus of being able to use the Manx Telecomputer Bus to tell their friends around the world about one of the most important days in the Isle of Man calendar.

That’s because Manx Telecom has agreed to let members of the public use the computer facilities on board the bus to check their emails – free of charge.

The bus will be parked in a prime spot close to the Tynwald Hill and next to the North American and Manx tents.

“Last year, the bus was inundated with visitors, many of whom requested access to the email facility and this year Manx Telecom has very kindly agreed to let people use the bus as an internet base to check their emails,” confirmed Alex Townsend, the man who oversees the vehicle’s running.

The Manx Telecom Computerbus has been in service as a mobile computer centre for the past 11 years having started out life in 1977 as part of the Manx bus fleet.

After a major overhaul, it’s now equipped with 24 of the latest Apple iMacs and is believed to be the most substantially accessorised and longest running computer vehicle of its kind in the British Isles.

“The bus continues to be incredibly popular and opening the facility to the general public on Tynwald Day is a great idea,” added Alex.
