Two new advocates in the Carey Olsen fiduciary team

Laila Arstall and Polly ListerIsle News, 9 July 2009 – Two fiduciary lawyers have been called to the bar in Guernsey. The Deputy Bailiff has sworn in advocates Laila Arstall and Polly Lister, the pair from Carey Olsen having passed the Guernsey Bar exams.

Having two further advocates has significantly reinforced the strength of the trust and fiduciary team at Carey Olsen, and managing partner John Greenfield, who is also Batonnier of the Guernsey Bar welcomed the achievements of the new advocates.

“Qualifying for the Guernsey Bar is a significant undertaking, with UK and French qualifications needed as well as passing Guernsey exams. In Laila and Polly we are lucky to have two very talented lawyers, and being sworn in as advocates is a further endorsement of their expertise.”

Advocate Arstall has already received recognition from the legal industry with Chambers UK noting that her “star continues to rise in the corporate, private client and tax fields” in their 2009 guide to the legal sector.

Advocate Arstall has experience in the formation and administration of companies and partnerships, in particular in the context of family businesses, as well as advising charitable institutions and businesses run by such institutions. Laila has also advised on strategies relating to the EU Savings Tax Directive for trustees, financial institutions and beneficiaries and has written a Guide To Taxation in Guernsey, the first comprehensive guide to changes to the tax regime in Guernsey, introduced in 2008.

Advocate Lister joined Carey Olsen in early 2002 where she undertook a training contract. Following qualification as a UK solicitor she joined Burges Salmon LLP in Bristol as an associate, focusing on corporate insolvency and banking work. Having returned to Carey Olsen in 2007, Advocate Lister is now a specialist lawyer in the Fiduciary team, advising leading Channel Islands trust companies on a broad range of fiduciary and corporate issues.

Advocate Greenfield added that helping staff to gain these qualifications was a key part of the firm’s strategy: “Our commitment to our staff is clearly demonstrated by the fact that we encourage and support them through this process. We feel it is vital that as a firm we develop our lawyers and also that we add to the expertise in the Guernsey legal system.”
