SURE SET TO FIND ITS APPRENTICE
Isle News, 22 October 2009 – Students from Jersey College for Girls are taking part in an innovative new competition to win an apprenticeship with Sure.
The Year 12 and 13 girls have been chosen to take part in The Sure Apprentice, which will run over the next eight months and see the 12 apprentices divided into groups, given different tasks and then whittled down to two finalists with the overall winner receiving a paid apprenticeship with Sure.
“We ran The Sure Apprentice in the Isle of Man last year and based on that success we have expanded it to the Channel Islands. It is a unique opportunity for Jersey’s future generation to learn new skills from experienced professionals, work as a team with their peers to reach a common aim and then face the questions from a panel,” said Graham Hughes, Chief Executive of Sure Jersey.
Mr Hughes will be joined on the judging panel by St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft and former business editor of the Jersey Evening Post, Christine Herbert.
Over the course of the competition, the teams will learn practical business skills by completing a series of challenges. They will be helped by Managing Director of First Research Julian Barber (market research), Managing Director of Image Group Andrew Lewis (personal selling), ASL Recruitment Managing Director, Tina Palmer (interview skills) and Jersey Hospice Care Fundraising and Events Manager Lynsey Beahan (fundraising & event management).
“Sure is delighted to be able to bring together such an able group of people to help us with The Sure Apprentice. Each of them has valuable experience that the students will benefit from and I am sure they will lean important life skills that will help with the tasks, their education and life in general,” said Mr Hughes.
After each task, the teams will face the Mr Hughes, Mr Crowcroft and Ms Herbert who will decide which apprentices will go through to the next round.
The tasks include market research into teenagers’ needs for a mobile phone, the selling of Jersey Hospice Care products and the design of a communications device of the future. The penultimate task will be based around interviews and the final task will see two finalists organising a fund-raising event.
“After each task, the members of the winning team will be given vouchers as a reward for their hard work. The ultimate winner will receive a mobile phone worth up to £300 and more importantly an eight week placement next summer with the Sure team,” said Mr Hughes.
