SUCCESS ON JOHNNY WATTERSON’S LANE

Johnny Watterson's LaneIsle News, 30 September 2009 – The Department of Transport is delighted to announce the completion of the major highway improvement scheme at Johnny Watterson’s Lane, which will be reopened to traffic by Friday 2nd October 2009.

The construction of this scheme started on site on the 3rd August 09 and has been completed in just 9 weeks using modern work practices.

Minister for Transport David Anderson MHK said: “The original programme for the works was 34 weeks’ but the Department was able to accelerate the programme by introducing new working methods, including a shift working system and plastic kerbs.  This project has demonstrated that by using modern working practices we can deliver a more efficient service, and reduce disruption to the travelling public and residents”.

The Minister explained “The completion of this final section of the Douglas Outer Link Road will improve the safety of all road users, including pedestrians, in this area of Douglas.  I am delighted that the works have been completed within programme and within budget”.

The Department would like to thank the residents of Governors Hill, Cronk-y-Berry and Abbeyfields for their tolerance of the extended working hours of our workforce.

The Department would also thank their team working on the project for delivering the finished scheme on time and within budget.

Union Representative for the Department’s workforce, Angus Kelly said: “The Unite Union has recognized for some time that we have to work proactively with the Department’s management team to help modernize the way we work.  This project has been first class example of what can be achieved when we work together to bring imaginative solutions to our service delivery.  We are sure that there will be many more successful initiatives in the future and we are pleased to be part of the Works Division’s change agenda”.
