Standard Bank swings into action to support Jersey
Isle News, 16 April 2009 – Golfers will be seeing just how good they are compared to players who will be representing Jersey at the next Island Games.
A fund raising golf day, sponsored by Standard Bank, is being held at the Royal Jersey Golf Course on 18 April to help raise the £12,000 needed to send the men’s and ladies teams to Aland for the Island Games from 27 June to 4 July.
Players from the Island Games squad are taking part: Four will be playing among the 26 teams who have paid £200 each to take part, while others will be challenging the golfers to beat them to the pin.
Fund raising golf day organiser Bob White said: “The teams that have entered include some pretty good golfers, and it’s a chance for them all to see just how immense the difference in standard is between even good players and Island players. It is also a chance for people to get to know the Island players that they’re at the fund raising day to support.
“Quite often golfers are supporting players whose names they have seen in match reports, but whom they have never met. This is a chance for them to get to know them, and to have an enjoyable day.”
The four men representing Jersey in Aland are Gavin O’Neill, Christy McLaughlin, Andrew Clarke and Sam Crenan, and the ladies are Gloria Paradiso, Alex Mollin, Elaine Pushman and Olivia Jordan-Higgins. Team managers Peter Crenan and Lynne Cottignies will complete the squad.
As part of the day Gloria, Alex, Christy and Sam will each be stationed at a different par 3 hole. The Island players will hit a single shot from the tee with every group and anyone closer to the pin will have a chance to win a bottle of champagne.
Mr White said: “The whole event is a fun way of getting people to see how good Island players are. The support that Standard Bank and the Royal Jersey Golf Course have given us has meant that our costs are minimal, and we hope to raise a substantial proportion of the £12,000 from the day.”
After the golf, all the players will have an evening meal, and the chance to take part in an auction and raffle to raise money for the Island Games. Among the auction lots is a golf bag from the 2008 Ladies Ginn Open in Florida, donated by the Open Director, signed by all 48 entrants including Anika Sorenstam who was making her final appearance before retiring.
Other Jersey firms have donated to the auction and raffle, including Voisins Advocates & Notary Public, The Moorings Hotel, David Morgan Golf Professional, Wheatlands Golf Club and La Moye Golf Club.
