STAFF PREPARED TO GO THAT EXTRA MILE FOR THE ISLE OF MAN CHILDREN’S CENTRE
Isle News, 12 March 2009 – The Isle of Man Children’s Centre (IOMCC) is a great place to work where people are prepared to put themselves out above the call of duty.
That’s the feedback volunteered by numerous members of staff at the Charity during an Investors in People Review which has concluded that the IOMCC has lived up to its status as an IIP flag bearer on the Isle of Man.
The brainchild of leading UK business and national Government in the early 1990s, the IIP standard is now a widely renowned framework for improving business performance and competitiveness through the effective management and development of employees. The IOMCC first achieved IIP accreditation in 2006.
“This was a particularly impressive review for the Isle of Man Children’s Centre,” was the conclusion of IIP Assessor Michael Lynch after spending two days during January interviewing a random selection of 27 junior and senior level staff amongst the IOMCC’s 152 strong workforce.
“Management should be congratulated for fully embracing the framework of the International Investors in People Standard and implementing a culture of continuous improvement,” reported Mr Lynch.
The findings highlighted that staff “held extreme loyalty to the IOMCC and indicated that because of the support and recognition they received, they would go “the extra mile” for the organisation.”
Staff who worked at the IOMCC were said to be highly motivated and definitely felt they could make a positive difference in terms of supporting disenfranchised people and raising self esteem, the report said.
It added that members of staff were also extremely clear on what the organisation was trying to achieve and how their team contributed to helping children who engaged with the IOMCC.
The report went on to say that Managers at the Centre were “extremely visible, accessible and pro-active in supporting staff” and provided staff with on-going professional support and encouragement.
The review also featured specific comments made by staff such as: “It’s an excellent organisation, good culture, nice people and it contributes to the community.”
Another employee remarked: “I actually feel quite proud to be associated with the Children’s Centre.”
“My manager praises us and is fantastic” and “I do feel appreciated,” were further comments made by IOMCC staff to the Assessor.
The charity is based from Woodbourne Road, Douglas and runs a further 13 sites across the island, collectively supporting in the region of 400 children and 100 families every week.
In recognition of the Charity’s glowing report from IIP, Trade and Industry Minister David Cretney MHK presented a special IIP certificate to several team members who were interviewed during the assessment.
“We are delighted to receive such a positive report from IIP,” said IOMCC Chief Executive John Knight. “Above all, we want to ensure that we continue to deliver an excellent service for the children of this island and provide a place of work that our staff genuinely enjoy being part of.”
