RONALDSWAY AIRPORT PROMONTORY PREPARES FOR INFILL
Isle News, 28 July 2009 – Contractors working on the promontory construction, the second phase of the Airport Runway Project at Ronaldsway, are making final preparations to receive the marine infill, with the first barge scheduled to arrive at the end of the July.
The modelled design of the promontory has always predicated marine dredged sands in order to allow for a superior compaction process.
Minister for Transport David Anderson MHK said: ‘At the beginning of the project, which received Tynwald approval in April 2008, there were several potential sources of marine infill and until very recently the Department was working with other Government Departments and UK regulatory bodies regarding the use of infill from Mersey Bay.
‘Unexpectedly, due to the downturn in the construction industry, an opportunity has arisen to purchase dredged material from a licensed dredging area located in the Irish Sea, between Douglas and the Cumbrian coast. This opportunity has meant savings within the project, including the financial benefits of having a source closer to the Island.’
Work on the infill of the promontory is scheduled to take up to two months to complete.
The site of this new source has been dredged since the 1970s, mainly for construction aggregate, however latterly the sand was used for the replenishment of the beach at Morecambe in Lancashire.
