Jersey Electricity Company achieves another environmental milestone
Isle News, 25 August 2009 – Jersey Electricity is celebrating achieving level two of the Eco-Active Business scheme. In order to become one of a select group of companies in Jersey to reach level two, Jersey Electricity has demonstrated to the assessing team at Eco Active that the company had significantly lessened the impact of their operations on the environment over a sustained period.
Chris Ambler, Chief Executive of the JEC commented: ‘We’ve worked hard to gain our level two status and we’re delighted that we’ve been recognised for the high standards we set ourselves for environmental excellence. Sustainability has been an important theme of our business for a long time and we continue to investigate other ways in which we can help improve the local environment and lower the carbon footprint of Jersey even further. I am also pleased to say that we’re not that far away from new higher efficiency heat pump technology that’ll be able to replace aging boilers providing greener, cheaper methods of heating homes and offices.’
Eco-Active is a collaboration between the Department of Economic Development and the Planning and Environment Department. The scheme focuses upon five main areas; energy, waste, water, transport and procurement and how businesses can adopt more sustainable processes and practices within these areas. To be granted level two, businesses must have an action plan demonstrating continuous and sustainable improvement. In addition to this, level two also requires businesses to adopt a strategic plan for emergencies and to ensure that all staff understands their role in the environment scheme.
Olivia Copsey of Eco Active, commented: ‘ We are delighted to welcome on board another level 2 accredited business. JEC has worked very hard to ensure that it meets the criteria required by Eco Active and as a consequence has improved its environmental credentials in the process. It is great to see a business that is keen to champion sustainable technologies such as heating system and even cars, all of which we use in our everyday lives.’
