GUERNSEY SENIORS HEAD SOUTH TO JERSEY
Isle News, 9 September 2009 – Guernsey’s leading senior golfers are hoping for an away win when they take on their Jersey counterparts this week.
The Channel Islands’ strongest individual senior players are set to compete in the Garenne Seniors Golf Challenge, at Royal Jersey Golf Club at Grouville, in Jersey. The Guernsey team was selected after last month’s Garenne Senior Golf Championship.
Guernsey’s non-playing Captain Mr Ken Tucknott was hopeful that the Island’s team would perform well, but said that selection had been difficult: ‘Unfortunately some of the Guernsey players selected were unavailable for this year’s Seniors.’ He added: ‘That’s disappointing but we must take heart from the availability of both Steve Birkett and David Warr, who are both playing very well. This is David’s first year as a senior player.’
The only La Grande Mare player, Hedley Ablitt, will miss this year’s Garenne Seniors Golf Challenge, due to business commitments in England. Mr Tucknott commented: ‘Again, that’s a pity as Hedley was close to defeating Mick King in this year’s excellent Guernsey seniors’ final.’
Mr Tucknott said that the Guernsey seniors would give a good account of themselves: ‘All of the selectors wish the team well and we hope that they have a successful visit.’
The venue for the Garenne Seniors Golf Challenge alternates each year between Jersey and Guernsey. The two-day Seniors Inter-Insular match has been contested 13 times, with Jersey claiming 11 wins. The event took place last year at L’Ancresse, where Jersey won the match. This year the hosts will again be captained by Clive Dobin.
Andy Hall, CEO of sponsors The Garenne Group, wished both teams well: ‘Once again we’re very pleased to be involved with this popular event, which is a major fixture in the Channel Island golfing calendar. We wish both teams the best of luck and hope that everyone has a very enjoyable couple of days at Grouville.’
The 2009 Garenne Seniors Golf Challenge will take place on the Royal Jersey Golf Club Course, starting at 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday 9 September and resuming at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday 10 September 2009.
