FESTIVAL OF FILMS AND ORGAN MUSIC AT KWC!

Isle News, 25 September 2009 – King William’s College will hold a screening of silent movies tomorrow (Friday 25th September 2009), as part of its Organ Festival weekend.

Two films will shown in the Chapel of St Thomas – ‘The Boat’ starring Buster Keaton and the ‘Big Business’ starring Laurel and Hardy – and will be accompanied by organist Robert Sudall on the school’s pipe organ.

The silent movie screening is part of the College’s Organ Festival weekend, which is supported by the Isle of Man Arts Council. Both films will run for a half an hour each and will demonstrate the vast capabilities of the pipe organ.

Robert Sudall is an experienced and accomplished organist who trained at the Royal Northern College of Music from 2002-2007. He studied with renowned organist Darius Battiwalla during this time, and has explored a wide range of organ playing styles with a particular interest in theatre organ.

As part of the Organ Festival, King William’s College will also welcome student Andrew Condliffe-Jones from the Royal Northern College of Music this weekend to demonstrate his skills to a wider audience. An educational workshop will take place on Friday morning, during which Andrew will give a master class for the College’s organ pupils.

The weekend will culminate with a one day film school on Sunday (27th September 2009) for Sixth Form pupils. Run by the Young Film Academy in London, the event will give the opportunity to get first hand experience of making films.  The YFA uses professional and experienced film-makers to teach choreography, plot and script, writing, story-boarding and film-making.

Principal of King William’s College, Dr Sarah Welch, commented: “This weekend will be a fantastic opportunity for pupils to learn more about the arts, receiving tuition from specialists in their fields.

“As part of the film school, they will be given the opportunity to make a ten-shot film, and the day will end with a mini festival where all films are shown and an award is given for ‘Best Film’. I am sure they will take a great deal from this weekend.”

Admission to the silent movie screening is £5 per ticket; they are available by calling Jo Bateson on 820400.
