Extraordinary students awarded bursaries
Isle News, 17 September 2009 – TWO hard-working and talented students have been awarded bursaries by Butterfield to ease the expense of University.
Natalie Carnachan and David Henry, ex-prefects of Ladies’ College and Elizabeth College respectively, were chosen for their academic ability as well as their impressive extra-curricular achievements.
They will each receive £1,500 every year for the three years they are at University as well as the opportunity to work at Butterfield in the holidays when possible.
Mr Henry said he was very happy to have been chosen.
“It will really be a tremendous help and make a big difference, not just for the bursary sum each year but for the prospect of employment during the holidays. It is difficult to find a job for such small periods of time, especially at the moment, so I’m really very pleased,” he said.
Mr Henry plans to attend Warwick University to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He achieved 3 As at A-level in Maths, RS and Classics, was a 6th form committee member and head of house. He also plays football, rugby and hockey, the electric and acoustic guitar and was a flight sergeant in the Cadet Force.
Miss Carnachan has attained 4 As in History, English literature, French and Spanish at A-Level and is very active in the musical community in Guernsey. She plays the viola in a number of orchestral groups and until recently sang in the Ladies’ College senior choir as well as completing gold, silver and bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards and playing in the women’s basketball league.
Miss Carnachan has been accepted by Durham University where she will study modern languages as well as learning Mandarin in her spare time.
“I was elated to hear I had won the bursary as they are not easy to come by. The experience I will get working at Butterfield during the holidays is invaluable and will take a lot of stress away. It also means I will be able to concentrate more on my studies as I won’t have to worry about finding holiday employment,” she said.
Butterfield’s deputy managing director, John Robinson, said: “We had a very high standard of applicants for the bursaries this year but these two students stood out. We look for well-rounded people with extra-curricular interests as well as good social skills, which both Natalie and David possess. They are both very bright and focused people and I am pleased that Butterfield is able to support them as they leave school and continue their education.”
