ECLECTIC MIX OF ARTISTS LINED UP FOR TT2009 AT THE VILLA MARINA

Isle News, 4 April 2009 – The Department of Tourism and Leisure today confirmed the line up for the 2009 TT races at the Villa Marina Gardens.

A number of leading acts will be featured throughout the TT races. The temporary stage in the gardens will also host top riders, as well as the popular TT chat show and prize presentations.

The concert series will be headlined by rock legends Whitesnake on Tuesday 9th June. Whitesnake are one of the world’s leading rock bands with numerous hits in the UK and the US including the number 1 “Here I go again” and “Is This Love”, which reached No. 2 in the U.S. singles chart. They also had hits in Britain with “Give Me All Your Love” and “Fool for your Loving”.

The TT festival at the Gardens will kick off on Friday 5th June with a performance by U2 UK, Europe’s premier tribute show to the Irish rock legends U2. It takes in the early years of U2 and will run right up to the last ‘Vertigo’ tour.

For over 30 years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been the quintessential American band and they will entertain TT fans on Saturday 6th June. The group’s distinctive and powerful sound, influenced by a diversity of musical styles, manifested itself into a unique musical hybrid via such barnburners as “Tuff Enuff” and “Wrap It Up”. Co-founder Kim Wilson, the sole original member, still spearheads the group as it evolves into its newest incarnation.

One of the more unusual acts to appear at the TT festival this year will undoubtedly be ‘The Red Hot Chilli Pipers’, probably the most famous Pipe and Drum group in the world, who will appear on the Villa Gardens stage on Sunday 7th June. The band originally found fame as winners of the prime time BBC One show ‘When Will I Be Famous’ with a blistering set Rock Bagpipes that astounded both the viewers and critics.

Variously entitled ‘Jock and Roll’ and ‘Bagrock’, the band has performed all over the world from the USA to China at the biggest of events and festivals. They have also featured on The Darkness album ‘One Way Ticket to Hell and Back’ and on the soundtrack to the film ‘Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire’ as well as appearing at leading UK festival ‘T in the Park’.

Monday 8th June sees the appearance at the Villa Gardens of ‘Route 66’.  The band will entertain fans with their medley of iconic tracks from a ‘who’s who’ of rock music, including instantly recognizable anthems from Bon Jovi, Meatloaf, Tina Turner, Cher, Elvis Pressley and many more.

The Hon Martyn Quayle MHK, Minister for Tourism and Leisure said, “We have picked a line-up that hopefully offers something for everyone.  We also want to make the entertainment as affordable as possible and so that everyone is able to enjoy the concerts at the Villa Marina.”

The concerts are scheduled to run from 7.30pm to 11pm.

In addition to the live entertainment in the Villa Marina Gardens, the Gaiety Theatre will host the extremely popular Eagles tribute, Talon on Thursday 4th June.

On Thursday 11th June, the Royal Hall will host the TTXGP concert featuring the 72 piece London Metropolitan Orchestra (LMO), sponsored by Aer Arran.  The concert features a world premier symphony specially commissioned for TTXGP to celebrate the launch of the world’s first clean emission grand prix. This symphonic pop/rock concert, which will feature the largest symphony orchestra seen onstage at the Villa Marina, will be a themed celebration of future technology and TT heritage and the programme will comprise contemporary film and chart music.

This unique event will include a modern repertoire of  film classics and rock/pop anthems and a special PA by Anna Goldsmith and will feature work from composers as diverse as  John Williams, Michael Kamen, Stavinsky, Debussy, Prince, Queen, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Rob Doughan and many more.
