ARE YOU GOING TO BE RACING THE SUN?
Isle News, 20 May 2009 – Are you up for a challenge this summer? Well, there’s still time to put yourself forward for the Isle of Man’s toughest challenges of all!
It’s called Race the Sun – a team relay race in which each team must complete a clockwise lap of the Island’s Radd ny Foillan 98 mile coastal footpath. Before the sun sets!
The charity event, organised by the Isle of Man Children’s Centre and sponsored by Mann Made, will take you across rugged cliff tops, through lush glens, over mountains, along tidal estuaries and isolated beaches.
Already, a growing number of teams have signed up for the big day in June, but if you have still to commit and want to find out more about the event, then the IOMCC are holding a special Race the Sun open evening on Wednesday May 27th at Douglas Yacht Club, starting at 6pm.
“It’s a great opportunity to find out about Race for the Sun or to assess how your plans are coming along and to meet other teams,” explains IOMCC Fundraising Coordinator Mark Eastham.
“And if you are struggling to find numbers for your team, or you would like to join another team, this is a great chance for you to meet other people in the same predicament and possibly join forces,” Mark added.
The race itself is scheduled for Saturday June 27th – one of the longest days of the year – and gets underway at 4.47am when the sunrises. Teams must complete the course by sunset at 9.55pm. The event starts and finishes on Peel seafront opposite the sailing club.
The average distance for each leg is 10 miles based upon a maximum number in each team of ten. The minimum number allowed in each team is five. The cost of each entry is £300 per team, including a £50 deposit.
“Quite simply, if you want to take part in an adventurous team event with a difference, then look no further than Race the Sun,” added Mark.
For statisticians, the course record stands at 15 hours 37 minutes set at last year’s inaugural event. But the IOMCC are expecting this year’s winning time to be even quicker with the anticipation of a much larger entry.
Meanwhile, all funds raised will go towards Mobex, the IOMCC’s mobile outdoor education facility for young people with a range of difficulties.
For further information come along to Douglas Yacht Club on Wednesday May 27th at 6pm or contact Mark Eastham on 676076 or email markeastham@iomcc.org.im.
